Our motto is what drives each and every member of our team to volunteer countless personal hours each year helping both kids and adults in our community learn about safety.

Our programs run all year long. On average each year, we see about 10,000 kids and conduct 40-50 presentations. Our Smokehouse allows us to show both kids and adults what it's like in a smoke filled room while in a safe environment.

We have some very good Powerpoint presentations for adults and a very educational Safe-T-Bear DVD for the younger kids.

We also host two Open House events each year, one in May and one in October. We offer free food, beverages, clowns, moon bounces, and more. This gives the kids a chance to hang out with the firefighters and the police for the day and learn about what each do. They also get the opportunity to check out all the engines and equipment up close.

On the first anniversary, in 2002, we wanted to do something to honor our fallen brothers and sisters. We started what we call The Bear Run. The idea was to visit sick children and try to brighten their day a little. We contacted A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital with the idea who agreed to allow us to come in to visit the kids. Through local donations, including the Delaware State Police and Build-A-Bear, we collected various stuffed animals. Members of the Christiana Fire Company and other local fire companies then visit every child we can at the hospital. The kids really seem to enjoy the visit by the local firefighters, but we're not sure who gets more enjoyment out of the experience - the kids or the firefighters! Some kids are too sick to even know we are there, but we leave them a bear in their crib or bed so they know we care.

The fire district for Christiana Fire Company is 38 square miles and consists of approximately 100,000 people (just about 1/8th of the entire state). On average, we run about 6,500 EMS calls and about 3,000 Fire calls each year.

• CDC (Center for Disease Control):
  • 2006 - Christiana Fire Co. Fire Prevention team was recognized on a national level in a study to improve the fire prevention programs in the U.S. through the blue print of what we have done in Delaware. Our Fire Prevention program was recognized in that study along with the Wake Up Delaware program.
